Diagnostic setup on a Peugeot 306 HDi

OBD2 diagnostic sockets are normally located within reach of the driver side seat. Most commonly in the lower part of the dash or centre/arm console.

On the Peugeot 306 the diagnostics socket is in the lower part of the dash, accessible after removing the lower panel (which also uncovers the fuse box). To remove the panel you just need to use a coin to twist the locating lug 90 degrees and it should come away.

In this example I'm using a ECUT-PRO327 multi protocol OBD2 interface from www.ecutools.com.

This interface uses the latest ELM327 processor and being multi-protocol means it will work on various makes and models of car. It also covers the latest CAN protocol which is becoming the set standard.

Working off a standard Windows based PC I simply plugged the USB connection of the interface into the laptop. Once Windows detected 'new hardware' I installed the drivers off the supplied CD. That all done now just to install the diagnostic software on the PC. This kit comes bundled with free Scantool software but there are many other softwares on the market that you can use with it - some trial/limited feature ones are included on the CD also.

Plugged up to the 306's diagnostic port and with the software running, the ignition key must be at position II at the very least. Running the engine is not required unless you also want to monitor live data.

Click on 'Connect' and the system begins communication with the vehicle figuring out which protocol it works on and making a connection with the ECU.

Okay, let's read if there are any fault codes stored....

Now, the check engine light has never come on this car and the car has been running fine so I don't really expect any fault codes to come up but fault codes can be stored even if the check engine light doesn't appear. The only fault code that has come up is <insert> which refers to the Exhaust Gas Recirculation module. I know this isn't a fault as I have purposely disconnected the EGR just for cleaner running of the engine. Disconnecting EGR is covered here.

With the engine running I can also monitor live data...

<being updated - please come back soon>
